Community Projects

The Academy fellows are encouraged to pursue community-based group projects during the second year of their fellowship. These projects put into practice The Academy's mission of combining musical excellence with education and community engagement and are an opportunity for the fellows to hone the skill sets needed to put these types of programs together under the guidance of expert organizations.
Stories from the GrandFamily Apartments

Stories from the GrandFamily Apartments is a collection of personal stories set to music composed in collaboration with residents of the PSS GrandFamily Apartments. A concert on June 6, 2010 marks the culmination of intensely personal and musical work that began in February 2010.

The M.U.S.I.C. Exchange

The M.U.S.I.C. Exchange runs from November 2008 through March 2009 creating a musical and written conversation across cultures and generations through an exchange of musical ideas and letters. Participants include students from PS 153M and Long Island City High School; 10 refugee high school students participating in the International Rescue Committee youth program; and members of the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas (POA).

Voice of the Whale

Voice of the Whale is an hour-long multimedia performance inspired by George Crumb's Vox Balaenae and features works, including the world première of Middle Bank Rounds by the American composer Ingram Marshall. The event takes place on May 17, 2009 at The American Museum of Natural History's Milstein Hall of Ocean Life.
