More Information
The Children's Music Campaign NYC was a project created by Academy fellows Claire Bryant, Carol McGonnell, and Elizabeth Joy Roe in the second year of their fellowship. Leading up to the project's culminating event, the Simple Gifts concert at Carnegie Hall, each fellow worked with their partner school—PS157x, PS46M, and PS131Q respectively—to prepare students for their debut in Zankel Hall on May 22nd, 2008. The video clips below document this project and the journey of everyone involved.
The Process—This clip introduces our partner teachers: Merrill Poliack, Susan Shumway, and Ned Ellis. It shows their untiring dedication to the children and indeed to music. It also exposes the great importance of encouragement in the lives of children and how it can produce truly marvelous results—not only on their instruments, but in their ability to concentrate, as reflected in their school work and consequently their lives. Children in New York Public Schools are very privileged to have contact with these wonderful role models. It is of the utmost importance that they be supported in the invaluable work that they are doing on a daily basis.—Carol McGonnell

Pass It On—At the heart of CMCNYC's mission is to pass on the gift of music. We believe that the universal language of music is one of the most powerful ways of bringing people together. Each human being can make a difference, even with something as simple as a song. How? Music can symbolize our shared humanity; represent our views of the world; provide us with a healthy outlet of expression; manifest our thoughts, emotions, and ideals; and engender greater harmony and understanding. While working on this project, I was struck by the connective thread that ran between me and my colleagues; and our students, schools, and communities. Numerous individuals—of diverse ages, cultural backgrounds, personalities, and abilities—joined together in the unified pursuit of making beautiful music. As I witnessed my students create and collaborate, I realized that we as Teaching Artists are simply there to pass on our passion, to start a chain of positive acts, and to light the artistic fuse that is already latent within these bright young souls. They, in turn, enrich our lives beyond words, giving us infinite inspiration to keep our music and our dreams alive.—Elizabeth Joy Roe
Accomplishment—This final clip of CMCNYC is my personal favorite because it is a special glimpse into our journey throughout this project. The title of this section, "Accomplishment," celebrates the culminating performance given by the children of PS 157X, PS 46M, and PS 131Q entitled Simple Gifts at Zankel Hall on May 22, 2008, highlighting the true "Accomplishment" that the students achieve. This is where we get to hear from them about their experience as musicians, and how music affects their lives—both inside and outside of the classroom. Each child has a different anecdote to share with us, but what resonates from all of them is an exploration of self-pride, potential, expression, and an unquestionable realization that they can do whatever they put their minds and hearts towards. This "Accomplishment" is more valuable and powerful than I could have ever imagined. These children have revived my sense of hope and belief that if we as a society can give all of them the chance to be the best they can be, our future will be as bright as they are!—Claire Bryant
