More Information
The Bar-olk Project is an interactive, educational concert event that features music of the Baroque era and of various folk traditions. The mission of this project is to promote awareness and understanding of these musical genres; to compare and contrast both their traditions of performance practice and their approaches to the idea of authenticity; and to create excitement and curiosity through a diverse and refreshing program.

Guest Artists

Chris Norman

Hailed as one of the finest flute players of our time, Chris Norman proves over and over again that the simple wooden flute is the original and still unsurpassed woodwind of expression, passion, joy, and subtlety. His influential work as a performer, composer, recording artist, and teacher has brought the simple wooden flute to the forefront as an alternative voice to the modern orchestral instrument.
Lionel Party

A native of Santiago, Chile, Lionel Party studied with Elena Waiss at the Escuela Moderna de Música, graduating in 1965. In 1966 he was awarded a Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst scholarship by the West German government to study piano with Rosl Schmid and harpsichord with Hedwig Bilgram at the Musikhochschule of Munich.

In 1970 Mr. Party came to The Juilliard School to study harpsichord with Albert Fuller first as a Fulbright scholar and then as recipient of a Juilliard alumni grant. He obtained his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Juilliard in 1976. Mr. Party has played solo recitals in New York City's major concert halls, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Frick Collection, Alice Tully Hall, Abraham Goodman House, and 92nd Street Y, as well as in Boston, Washington, DC, and other US cities. He has made numerous appearances with Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, Waverly Consort, Solisti New York, among other ensembles. He is a faculty member of The Juilliard School and The Curtis Institute of Music.
The Chris Norman Ensemble, Nick Halley, Percussion and Andy Thurston, Guitar

Nick Halley grew up at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City, where his father, Paul Halley, was Director of Music. His earliest memories are of the rich variety of music there, from sacred choral to African dance. Mr. Halley spent a number of years tagging along with the Paul Winter Consort, whose percussionists Glen Velez, Ted Moore, Gordon Gottlieb, and Jamey Haddad were often passing him a cowbell or shaker. These early influences proved to be lasting; when he was 15, Mr. Halley dropped baseball and other endeavors to study music full-time at Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan, majoring in jazz and classical percussion. Two years later he left for Brazil, where he spent a year immersed in the great tradition of Brazilian rhythm, studying with Márçio Bahia, Pedro Lima, and Oscar Bolão, as well as playing with Viradouro, one of Rio's top samba schools. Mr. Halley then returned to New York City to attend The New School University's jazz and contemporary music program, where he studied with Amir Ziv, Billy Hart, and Jamey Haddad, and played with a host of young artists in New York's ever-evolving jazz scene.

Andy Thurston is a mainstay in the East Coast traditional music scene and has accompanied many of the area's most renowned musicians. Mr. Thurston has a Bachelor of Arts degree in classical guitar from Towson State University and has taught guitar at Catonsville Community College for 22 years. Well versed in a variety of styles, he infuses elements of jazz and swing guitar into the music of Ireland, Scotland, Quebec, and Maritime Canada.

The Baroque Ensemble, Meena Bhasin, Viola, Sami Merdinian, Violin and Jody Redhage, Cello

Meena Bhasin is a violist whose interests lie in music and international relations. She has traveled extensively, performing and collaborating in cultural exchange programs in Japan, China, Iran, and Israel; these experiences have sparked her interest in music as a force to facilitate cross-cultural dialogue. Ms. Bhasin grew up under the guidance of Itzhak Perlman at the Perlman Music Program. During these years she appeared at the Mostly Mozart Festival, Live from Lincoln Center, and as a guest artist with Itzhak Perlman, Pinchas Zukerman, and the Israel Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall. In 2007 Ms. Bhasin graduated from a dual degree program between Tufts University, where she graduated with honors in International Relations, and New England Conservatory, where she was the recipient of the 2006 Presser Award. Ms. Bhasin is currently a fellow in The Academy-a program of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and The Weill Music Institute in partnership with the New York City Department of Education; she performs chamber music regularly at Carnegie Hall and works as a teaching artist at Middle School 72. Ms. Bhasin's musical interests go beyond her classical upbringing to encompass various types of world and popular music. Her most recent engagements have included a tour of the East Coast with Jethro Tull and a performance with Vampire Weekend on Saturday Night Live.

The 25-year-old violinist Sami Merdinian has received worldwide recognition for his outstanding performances as a soloist and chamber musician. Mr. Merdinian has recently appeared as a soloist with the Buenos Aires Philharmonic, Montevideo Philharmonic, Charlemagne Orchestra, and Symphony Pro Musica. Future engagements include performances with the Argentinean National Symphony and a European tour with the Philharmonia of the Nations, including a performance at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, as well as recital tours throughout the Middle East and North and South America.

Cellist, composer, and vocalist Jody Redhage has dual passions for chamber music and new music; this has led her to participate in an array of cutting-edge projects. Ms. Redhage has premiered over 100 works, including many of her own compositions for chamber ensembles. Recently called an "adventurous cello songstress" (Time Out New York), Ms. Redhage simultaneously sings and plays cello. Her debut CD on New Amsterdam Records, All Summer in a Day, has been called "a freewheeling, slightly edgy, and altogether 'different' kind of musical experience … highly rewarding and worthwhile" (Dave Lewis, All Music Guide).
