Watch a video featuring Academy fellow Evan Premo.

About the Program

The Academy selects up to 20 of the world's finest young professional musicians to be part of the program and provides them with varied professional experiences including ensemble performances in Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School and Skidmore College; school partnerships within the New York City public school system; residencies at Skidmore College; and the opportunity to propose and develop community-based group projects. It provides support and benefits for the fellows while part of The Academy and a professional network for the alumni.

Performances

As part of Ensemble ACJW, the fellows perform in ensembles of various sizes. Ensemble ACJW gives performances at Carnegie Hall; The Juilliard School; (le) Poisson Rouge; at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY; other venues in New York City; and interactive performances in New York City public schools. Fellows are actively engaged in programming these concerts.

School Partnership

Each fellow is matched with a New York City public school for a 36-day residency and brings his/her unique artistry into K-12 classrooms. The residency focuses on student-centered, musical skill-building through interactive performance units and creative approaches to skills-based work.

Skidmore College residencies

Fellows engage the Skidmore College and greater Saratoga Springs community through activities including:
  • Performances on Skidmore College campus-in nontraditional locations and in Filene Concert Hall
  • Master classes, coachings, and lessons with the music department at Skidmore College
  • Visits to classes at Skidmore College
  • Composition reading sessions with area composers
  • K-12 school visits in the Saratoga Springs area

Year 2 Group Project

In their second year of the program, fellows have the opportunity to propose ideas for group projects that fulfill the mission of The Academy. Fellows with approved proposals are given access to the resources of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, The Weill Music Institute, and the New York City Department of Education to realize their ideas. Such undertakings hone the skill sets needed to produce group projects under the guidance of these expert institutions.

Professional Development

To support the fellows in each of the above, The Academy provides the following professional development:
  • Sessions devoted to the development of professional skills and personal leadership
  • Lessons to hone the mastery of one's instrument, expand one's stylistic boundaries, or to learn about interactive music education models
  • Coaching sessions on the works to be performed at Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, Skidmore College, and in interactive concerts at New York City public schools
  • Training specifically for residency in a New York City public school
  • Mentorship by professional Teaching Artists; Academy staff; and other staff of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and The Weill Music Institute
  • Access to top-level professionals in the music industry including musicians, teaching artists, presenters, journalists, and composers
  • Involvement in the programming of performances

Benefits

Fellows receive a stipend of $24,818 along with health benefits, access to rehearsal and performance facilities, and a monthly MetroCard. The average time commitment by each fellow is approximately 20 hours per week.
